Catholic Cup

Congratulations to those pupils who represented St  Mary's at the annual football Catholic Cup at All Saints Catholic High School on Wednesday 18th June.  As usual, we were up against teams of a very high standard and our mini league was very tightly contested with most matches being either draws or wins by a margin of 1 goal.  The team played extremely well, not losing a match within the league.  There ere some great individual and team play, fantastic goals and impressive saves by our goalie, Bailey. As the last of the league matches kicked off, the points were very tight and we knew that to ensure progression to the semi finals, we needed to win our last match.  Unfortunately, we were up against strong opposition and we came away with a draw, meaning that we missed out on a place in the semi finals by 1 point.  This was very hard for the kids to take, but take it they did, with good grace and a positive attitude.  They knew they had played well and given it their all.  No one could ask anymore!
I know that I have made this comment after various other tournaments that I have taken the children to this over the past few years, but they really were a credit to the school and their parents.  There seems to be a St Mary's team spirit that goes with us.  The children look our for each other, congratulate and encourage one other, play fairly but play to win. It was an absolute privilage to take this group of children and watch them representing our school in the way that they did.
A massive thankyou to Mrs Cooper for providing her usual encouragement, inspirational team talks and refreshments!. Also thanks to Damien for helping put the team together and giving his time to coach the children throughout the tournament.  His involvement with the children in the lead up to and during the tournament made a huge difference.  The final thanks (this is turning into an Oscar's speech!) goes to the team.  Well done guys, you were fabulous!
