On Wednesday 4th December, 8 pupils from Year 4 participated in a basketball tournament at Ecclesfield Secondary School.  After a little rejigging of the team due to illness and injury and two children stepping in at the last minute we arrived keen and eager to take on the opposition.  We were not daunted by the fancy basketball kits worn by some of the other teams as we donned our team t shirts and set about warming up and weighing up the other teams.

Game 1 saw us competing against Coit primary school.  They gave us a good match and the game ended up as a draw, each team having scored 1 basket.  Time for 'Golden Basket'!  There followed 4 extra minutes, first team to score were the winners.  Both teams had chances to score, but finally Mason sunk the winner!

Game 2 was against Lound school.  Another close match but 2 baskets by Finlay gave us another victory.

Game 3.  Pressure was now on.  If we won this one, would win the tournament.  This game was against Ecclesfield who had a very strong team in the first half and they ended the half 3-0 up. At this point, we could have given up as there was very little time to pull the score back. But, that is not the St Mary's way and we entered into the second half full of enthusiasm.  We attacked their basket but the ball just didn't seem to want to go in.  Finally, we pulled one back followed by two more to even the scores. After another tense minute the winner was scored.  Well done to Finlay and Rhys for sharing the baskets in this match.

As we had won all our matches, we were the winners of the tournament and will now progress to the final in the New Year.

Well done to all the children who took part.  Their attitude and effort was exemplary, cheering each other on, encouraging each other and shaking hands at the end of each match.  Winning was fantastic, but even more wonderful was to see children who are new to this sport really having fun and growing in confidence.

Thanks again to Mrs Cooper for her support and help (and volunteering to take the kit home to wash!)

GO ST MARY'S!!!
