Year of St Joseph

Marking the 150th anniversary of St Joseph being declared patron of the universal church, Pope Francis proclaimed a yearlong celebration dedicated to the foster father of Jesus. In an apostolic letter, "Patris Corde" ("With a father's heart"), the Pope said that Christians can discover in St Joseph, who often goes unnoticed, "an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble."

Here at St Mary's, we will be marking the Year of St Joseph in a variety of ways starting with introductory collective worship for all classes in January. During Lent, we have been looking at the virtues of St Joseph each week: protective, tender, loving, courageous, accepting, hardworking, obedient and selfless. We will observe St Joseph's feast day on March 19th with a presentation by Mini Vinnies and time for reflection and prayer.

Below is a list of ways to celebrate that could also be used by families and individuals at home:

  • Learn about St Joseph's virtues and try to imitate them
  • Plan a pilgrimage to one or more of the St Joseph parishes across our diocese
  • Attend Mass on the St Joseph feast days: March 19th and May 1st
  • Include prayers to St Joseph in your morning and evening prayers

Prayer for the Year of St Joseph - Pope Francis

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,

Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

To you God entrusted his only Son;

in you Mary placed her trust;

with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,

show yourself a father,

and guide us in the path of life.

Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,

and defend us from every evil. Amen.
